  1.                      REQUIREMENTS / SET-UP / ADDITIONAL INFO

  3.      Treebase is easy to set up and use on your computer. First of all,
  4.      please note the following system requirements:
  5.  
  6.                              DOS 2.1 or above
  7.                              color monitor
  8.                              384K RAM minimum
  9.                              hard disk drive
  10.  
  11.      The program may be operated from a floppy drive, but performance is
  12.      reduced significantly with the increased time required to find and
  13.      read records. Conversely, optimum performance is achieved using a RAM
  14.      or virtual drive, which is actually ideal for many programs as long as
  15.      you remember to copy your changed data files to a physical drive
  16.      before turning off your computer.

  18.      Another hindrance to the performance of many programs is slow
  19.      processor speeds. Treebase will work regardless of speed or processor,
  20.      but the author has found that screen updating in the Treebase view
  21.      window is best when used with the highest speed that can be attained
  22.      on a computer. Incidentally, Treebase works most optimally on faster
  23.      computers; the higher the speed, the better.

  25.      The following six files, with a brief description of each, comprise
  26.      the Treebase package:
  27.  
  28.        TREEBASE.EXE - The program itself
  29.        TREEBASE.TXT - Combined help and documentation, accessible on-line
  30.        TREEBASE.INF - You're looking at it
  31.        TREEBASE.SYS - Data file to hold database set-up
  32.        TREEBASE.ITM - Data file to hold database records (items)
  33.        TREEBASE.NOT - Data file to hold notes of records
  34.  
  35.      One database per DOS directory is allowed and consists of the three
  36.      data files specified above. If the three data files are not present in
  37.      the current directory, the program will create new ones indicating the
  38.      start of a new database. If all three are present, the program loads
  39.      the data automatically when the program is run. A convenient method to
  40.      maintain separate databases is to place a directory containing
  41.      TREEBASE.EXE in the DOS path. This way, all you have to do is to type
  42.      Treebase when in or after changing to the directory that holds the
  43.      database you wish to access. To access the on-line program info,
  44.      TREEBASE.TXT must be available in the directory in which you are
  45.      currently working.

  47.      The three data files on the distribution disk contain the data for the
  48.      sample database. These will be accessed when the program is run.
  49.      (Refer to the documentation for more information about the sample
  50.      database.) Copy all data files to your fixed disk before evaluating
  51.      the program. To start a new database, either rename/delete the three
  52.      sample data files, or preferably change to another directory and start
  53.      Treebase via the path as mentioned above, or copy TREEBASE.EXE to the
  54.      new directory. Also copy TREEBASE.TXT to this directory in order to
  55.      access the documentation within Treebase.

  61.      The following command line options may be used when starting the
  62.      program:  
  63.                              TREEBASE [/43] [/50]
  64.  
  65.        Use the /43 switch if you have EGA or VGA and want the 43-line mode
  66.        Use the /50 switch if you have VGA and want the 50-line mode
  67.  
  68.      The main advantage of a higher resolution screen mode includes the
  69.      ability to view a larger portion of the database in the view window.
  70.      Disadvantages include slower program display in the view window, and
  71.      the reduction of other program screens configured for 25-line mode to
  72.      less than their normal size.

  74.      The details of using the program can be found in the TREEBASE.TXT
  75.      file, which you may print by typing TYPE TREEBASE.TXT >LPT1 at the DOS
  76.      prompt, assuming LPT1 is the correctly attached printer port for your
  77.      system. (Printing is not entirely necessary, however, as you may view
  78.      the contents of TREEBASE.TXT within the program itself by pressing
  79.      F1.) The file TREEBASE.INF may be printed in a similar manner to above
  80.      if you would like a printed copy of what you are reading now. In fact,
  81.      a printed copy will provide you with the following registration form
  82.      which you may use when you decide to register. The registration fee of
  83.      $25 entitles the user, exclusively, to utilize the software on no more
  84.      than a single computer at one time. No restrictions apply to the number
  85.      of backup copies the user wishes to produce.

  87.      Please note that when using the program, always exit to DOS before
  88.      turning off the computer. Doing this will prevent the possible loss of
  89.      newly added data still retained in the file buffer by writing it to the
  90.      disk.
